Two women practicing safe firearm handling at an indoor range

If the idea of a first range day makes you a little nervous, you're in exactly the right place. Here are five things that make the whole experience easier, no experience required.

01 / 05

You don't need to know anything first.

This is the one thing that stops most women, and it shouldn't. You don't need to own a firearm, know the parts, or have ever held one. Walking in knowing nothing is completely normal; teaching you, calmly and in order, is the entire job. Come exactly as you are.

02 / 05

Learn the four safety rules, and you're already ahead.

Safety isn't complicated. It's four habits that quickly become automatic:

  • Treat every firearm as if it's loaded.
  • Never point it at anything you're not willing to destroy.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you've decided to fire.
  • Know your target and what's beyond it.

Master these four and you're handling firearms more responsibly than most people who have owned one for years.

03 / 05

Dress for comfort and safety.

A few simple choices make the day easier: closed-toe shoes, a higher neckline (a crew-neck top rather than a low or scooped one), and hair tied back. Leave the rest to us; eye and ear protection and everything else you'll need is provided. Bring yourself; we've got the gear.

04 / 05

It's normal to feel nervous, and calmer than you expect.

The first shot is louder and quicker than most people picture, and a flutter of nerves is completely normal. What surprises most women is how quiet the room actually feels: private, women only, unhurried, no one watching or judging. Nerves fade fast when no one is rushing you.

05 / 05

Confidence is built, not born.

No one is naturally good at this. Confidence comes from calm repetition, not talent, and it moves faster than you would think when the setting is right. Most women leave their first day standing a little taller than they walked in.

When you're ready
